Student Focus - Maria “Rocio” Fernandez – Cazenovia, NY

Forestry Student

Maria "Rocio" Fernandez

A love of the outdoors and a desire to take full advantage of all opportunities that come her way led University of Maine forestry major Maria “Rocio” Fernandez  to spend spring break volunteering on the Jatun Sacha biological reserve in Ecuador as part of REACH – a UMaine student organization dedicated to promoting awareness in Maine about global issues such as health, hunger and the environment.

The trip was such a success that Fernandez is preparing to go back for the spring semester and further her field experience by collaborating in a long-term project.

In addition to her core forestry studies, Fernandez is an Honors College student and a member of the Maine Outing Club. Students interested in the outdoors, from conservation efforts to recreational activities, participate in a variety of outings throughout the year that are organized by club committee members.
