Prior to the University of Maine I worked as Postdoctoral Research Associate at Oregon State University (2005-2006) and Göttingen University, Germany (2007) and as Lecturer at Freiburg University, Germany (2007-2013). My research activities have covered the silvicultural manipulation of regeneration and growth dynamics of mixed species forests, limitations of the close-to-nature forest management paradigm in central Europe and the ecology and silviculture of oak forests.

My current research activities focus on 1) quantifying forest structural heterogeneity and analyzing its effect on stand- and tree-level growth, 2) modeling the influence of alternative forest management practices such as partial harvesting and target diameter cutting on stand dynamics and forest regeneration patterns, and 3) development and advancement of variants of the Forest Vegetation Simulator (FVS) for the Acadian and Adirondacks Regions of North America.
