I grew up in upstate New York and have a long acquaintance with the many and sometimes conflicting demands we place on our forests. As a consequence, I have dedicated my career to understanding forest ecology and translating that knowledge into sustainable forest management. My research addresses ecology and management of mixed-species forests, especially northern conifers and northern hardwoods, with a focus on uneven-aged silviculture and other forms of partial cutting.
I began my career with the U.S. Forest Service in 1994 and have been associated with the University of Maine faculty since 2000. I work for the Northern Research Station and am a Team Leader in the Northern Forest Science and Applications research work unit (RWU-NRS-07).
