Student organizations
Students in the School of Forest Resources have many ways to get involved, build community, and grow professionally outside the classroom. SFR hosts several active student organizations, including the Student Chapter of the Forest Products Society, the Student Chapter of the Society of American Foresters (SAF), Xi Sigma Pi Forestry Honor Society, and Timber Sports – The Woodsman Team—each offering opportunities for leadership, networking, field experiences, and connection with peers who share a passion for forests and natural resources. Additionally, groups like SWIFT (Supporting Women in Forestry Today) provide support to women, non-binary students, and allies in forestry, creating an inclusive community and empowering students to succeed in the field.
The Society of American Foresters (SAF) is the leading national professional organization representing forestry and natural resource professionals in the United States, dedicated to advancing sustainable forest management through science, education, and ethical practice. Joining an SAF student chapter connects you with a community of peers and professionals, offering opportunities for professional networking, leadership development, and hands-on experiences like workshops, field trips, and conferences. Student members also gain access to SAF’s career resources, publications, scholarships, and discounted registration for regional and national events, helping bridge academic learning with real-world career pathways and industry engagement.
Xi Sigma Pi is the national honor society dedicated to recognizing academic excellence and leadership in forestry and natural-resources education. Founded in 1908 with a long tradition in the profession, membership is limited to students who have demonstrated strong academic performance and meaningful engagement in forestry or related fields. At UMaine, the Gamma Chapter provides members with opportunities to network with peers and professionals, develop leadership skills, and participate in service-oriented activities—such as annual events that support student scholarships. Being part of Xi Sigma Pi highlights your commitment to your field, connects you with a community of high-achieving students, and enriches both your academic and professional journey.
The UMaine Woodsmen Team is a historic student organization that celebrates Maine’s forestry heritage through traditional timber sports competitions. Team members train in events such as sawing, chopping, axe throwing, and log rolling—developing practical forestry skills, athleticism, and teamwork. The club welcomes students from all majors, offering a supportive environment where beginners can learn from experienced peers and grow through practice and regional competition. Joining the Woodsmen Team is a unique way to connect with Maine’s working forest culture, build lasting friendships, and represent UMaine at events across the Northeast.
SWIFT (Supporting Women in Forestry Today) is a student-driven group dedicated to advancing opportunities, support, and community for women, non-binary students, and allies within forestry and related natural-resource fields. SWIFT hosts regular discussions, workshops, field events, and networking opportunities designed to build confidence, share strategies for academic and professional success, and foster a more inclusive, supportive environment in a traditionally male-dominated discipline. Participating in SWIFT gives students a chance to connect with peers and mentors, engage in meaningful conversations about equity and career paths, develop leadership skills, and be part of a community that champions belonging and empowerment throughout their education and into the workforce.
